March 8 – April 2, 2004
Temporary Services is a group of three individuals –Brett Bloom, Salem Collo-Julin, and Marc Fischer – formed in 1998 to celebrate the many ways that people insert their own ideas into public places. They do this by collecting and documenting spontaneous and ephemeral public expressions like roadside memorials to accident victims, temporary housing encampments, children’s tree houses and idiosyncratic public notices. They also stage projects designed to be stumbled upon in unlikely public places, projects such as an outdoor free clothing boutique, a day long bike rally for youth, and a “gift” of 100 self-published and small press books surreptitiously added to the Chicago Public Library. They will be spending the weekend prior to March 8 installing an exhibition of several projects including “Prisoner Inventions”, a collaboration with Angelo, who has been noticing and documenting from the inside the myriad wildly creative things that prisoners invent and fabricate in order to maintain some measure of personal autonomy.
